Herpes zoster infection, often called "shingles," is a viral infection that occurs with reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). More than 95% of immunocompetent individuals aged 50 years or older are seropositive for VZV. Although usually a self-limited rash with pain, shingles can be far more serious. Acute cases can lead to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which can be severe and incapacitating.
