Cancer of the bile duct, or cholangiocarcinoma, is a rare malignant neoplasm of the intrahepatic or extrahepatic biliary epithelium. Late diagnosis and fatal outcome are both common with this disease. Although multimodal treatment options exist, including surgical, nonsurgical, local, regional, and systemic treatments, many patients are relegated to palliative therapy because effective therapeutic strategies are currently lacking.
