Cancer of the bile duct, or cholangiocarcinoma, is a malignant neoplasm of the intrahepatic or extrahepatic biliary epithelium. It is the most common biliary tract cancer and the second most common primary hepatic cancer. Although its etiology is largely unknown, long-term inflammation, such as in primary sclerosing cholangitis or chronic parasitic infection, has been suggested to play a role. Cholangiocarcinoma may cause biliary tract obstruction or may remain relatively indolent.
