Bacterial pneumonia is caused by a pathogenic infection of the lungs and may present as a primary disease process or as the final, fatal disorder, primarily in an individual who is already debilitated. Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the most common infectious diseases and is an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Each year, around 1 million adults in the United States are hospitalized because of pneumonia, and 50,000 die from this illness. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimates that pediatric pneumonia kills more than 2000 children globally each day.
