The T2 biomarkers available for clinical use are quantitative sputum cytometry, blood eosinophil count, FeNO, and serum IgE.

Although it is not helpful in managing mild to moderate asthma, sputum quantitative cytometry has consistently been shown to help manage severe asthma. Using sputum cell counts to titrate corticosteroid treatment in patients with severe asthma has resulted in significant improvements in asthma control and reduction of exacerbation.

Blood eosinophil is not sensitive in picking up the most severe asthmatics because the relationship between sputum and blood eosinophilia becomes weaker with increasing disease severity, especially in prednisolone-dependent asthmatics. The correlation between FeNO, periostin, and serum IgE levels and sputum eosinophil counts is poor.
