About half of all patients with asthma have eosinophilic asthma (EA), a subtype of the disease that is characterized by higher levels of this particular inflammatory cell in the sputum, airway, or blood. EA accounts for about 70% of severe asthmatic cases. Over the past several years, research has elucidated some disease mechanisms associated with EA, which has helped steer efforts to develop targeted treatments.
