ADA diagnostic criteria for diabetes include:
A fasting plasma glucose level ≥ 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L), or
A 2-hour plasma glucose level ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) during a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, or
An A1c level ≥ 6.5% (48 mmol/mol), or
In a patient with classic symptoms of hyperglycemia or hyperglycemic crisis, a random plasma glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L)
However, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends that A1c be considered an additional optional diagnostic criterion, rather than a primary criterion, for diagnosis of diabetes.
