Cigarette smoking conveys an increased risk for the development of plaque psoriasis. Other environmental factors that increase the risk of developing plaque psoriasis include all types of trauma, such as physical, chemical, electrical, surgical, infective, and inflammatory injury.

Low humidity has also been identified as a possible trigger for psoriasis.
