Phototherapy is typically initiated only in the presence of extensive and widespread disease (more lesions than can be easily counted), but resistance to topical treatment is another indication for phototherapy.

PUVA can be combined with oral retinoid derivatives to reduce the cumulative dose of UVA radiation to the skin.

UVB phototherapy is very effective for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and should be considered in appropriate patients.

Narrow-band UVB phototherapy may convey a lower risk for burning than broadband UVB.
