Hepatitis B is a significant global health problem. Approximately one third of the global population has been infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), which can cause both acute and chronic disease. Liver injury, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma can result. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 257 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B infection in 2015, and more than 880,000 deaths were attributed to the disease.
