A study that assessed the similarities and differences of nr-axSpA and ankylosing spondylitis found a significantly higher amount of inflamed lesions seen by MRI per patient in those with established ankylosing spondylitis versus those with nr-axSpA.

The frequency of extra-articular manifestations is generally comparable in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and nr-axSpA.

Major structural changes are not believed to occur in the spines of patients with nr-axSpA.

In most patients, symptoms ensue before the age of 40 years.
