According to UNAIDS, as of 2019, there were approximately 38 million individuals living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Of these individuals, approximately 25.4 million people with HIV (67%) were accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART) globally. Although there is no cure for HIV infection, awareness of status and adherence to ART or prophylactic measures remain the mainstays of both patient treatment and prevention of transmission of HIV. Due in part to recent advances and scaling-up of ART, AIDS-related deaths have been reduced by 60% since a peak in 2004.
