Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease that attacks myelinated axons in the central nervous system, leading to significant physical disability. The signs and symptoms of MS may include paresthesias, weakness, spasticity, visual loss, imbalance, pain, bladder and bowel dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and psychiatric disturbances—most commonly depression. An estimated 2.2 million people are affected by MS worldwide, and its prevalence is increasing.
