Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, immune-mediated, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). MS causes disability in more than 50% of patients. Symptoms vary and are related to the type of MS and location of demyelination. Any neurologic symptom can appear early in MS, but the most common are sensory and visual. Ocular disturbances result from either afferent or efferent pathway demyelination.
Recognizing the neuro-ophthalmologic consequences of demyelination is crucial to understanding clinically isolated syndrome and MS diagnosis, exacerbation, and progression. Do you know the neuro-ophthalmologic features of MS? Check your knowledge with this short quiz.
