Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common cardiac arrhythmia, is often associated with other cardiovascular (CV) diseases, including hypertension; heart failure; diabetes-related heart disease; ischemic heart disease; and valvular, dilated, hypertrophic, restrictive, and congenital cardiomyopathies. However, some patients do not experience associated comorbidities (lone AF).

Management of patients with AF is complex and incorporates consideration of comorbidities combined with risk for thromboembolic events. Early intervention is essential to decrease the electrical, contractile, and structural atrial remodeling that occurs during AF.

Guidelines have been established in Europe for the clinical management of patients with new-onset and long-term AF.

How well do you know the current treatment recommendations for AF? Test your knowledge with this quick quiz.
