According to the American Psychiatric Association, anxiety disorders are the most common type of psychiatric disorders. Many patients with anxiety disorders experience related physical symptoms and subsequently visit their primary care providers. Despite their high prevalence rates, anxiety disorders often are underrecognized and undertreated.
Behavioral therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy have demonstrated efficacy through controlled studies. Treatment for anxiety usually consists of a combination of pharmacotherapy and/or psychotherapy.
