Acute heart failure is characterized by rapid onset or deterioration of symptoms and/or signs of heart failure, frequently with decompensation of preexisting cardiomyopathy. It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Mortality is high among patients with acute heart failure, with 90-day readmission rates and 1-year mortality between 10% and 30% as of 2020. Early diagnosis and intervention are essential for optimizing outcomes.
