Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is characterized by a shortage of exocrine pancreatic enzymes; as a result, the amount and/or activity of pancreatic digestive enzymes are insufficient for normal digestion, resulting in maldigestion and malabsorption. The clinical manifestations and biochemical alterations of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency may cause diminished quality of life as well as life-threating complications. Timely recognition and treatment are essential for improving outcomes; however, the diagnosis of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is frequently challenging because its signs and symptoms overlap with those of other gastrointestinal conditions.
