For most patients with IPF, a physical examination will reveal fine bibasilar inspiratory crackles ("Velcro-type" crackles). Extrapulmonary involvement does not occur with IPF. Patients may experience a dry cough. Physical examination findings are insufficient to help confirm the diagnosis of IPF.
