Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a form of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, a chronic disease of unknown etiology that is generally associated with a poor prognosis. In IPF, progressive scarring of the lungs results in a gradual decline in lung function and increasing respiratory symptoms in affected individuals. Although IPF is characterized by the involvement of a single organ, numerous comorbidities and complications can arise within other organ systems that influence the prognosis and natural course of the disease. These comorbidities and complications add to the symptomatic and functional outcomes of IPF and may be associated with higher rates of mortality and significant loss of quality of life, making their identification and management vital.
