Diabetes is an increasing global health problem. According to the International Diabetes Federation, there were more than 450 million individuals worldwide with diabetes in 2017; by 2045, that number is expected to increase to 693 million. Diabetic nephropathy is one of the most substantial complications of diabetes, and as the incidence of diabetes has increased, so too has the incidence of diabetic nephropathy. About 40% of patients with diabetes develop diabetic nephropathy, and it has become the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease.
