Acne vulgaris is a common chronic skin disease involving blockage and/or inflammation of pilosebaceous units (hair follicles and their accompanying sebaceous gland). Responses to therapeutic agents for acne may vary in people of color, including individuals of African, Asian, Latino, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Native American descent. Acne treatment in skin of color should focus on early and sustained control, because these skin types have a tendency toward postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and keloid development. Clinicians must consider the nuanced clinical and histologic differences of skin of color, as well as the variations in treatment regimens commonly used for these individuals.
