According to Zappa and colleagues, squamous cell NSCLC comprises up to 30% of all lung cancer cases. Squamous cell NSCLC develops from the transformation of the squamous cells lining the bronchial tubes in the central part of the lung. The main causative agent of cellular transformation is cigarette smoking, a factor that contributes to 85%-90% of lung cancers. Indeed, the risk for lung cancer is associated with environmental and lifestyle factors, such as smoking and additional carcinogenic exposures (eg, asbestos). In addition, squamous cell NSCLC is more common in men than women.

Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer among nonsmokers and former smokers and is more common in women than men. Studies have postulated that lung adenocarcinoma may be influenced by estrogen.
