Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe lung condition in which fluid builds up in alveoli in the lungs. It is most often seen in individuals who are critically ill or who have significant injuries. Patients with severe illness related to COVID-19 may quickly progress to ARDS.
