A retrospective study of 201 patients with confirmed COVID-19 found that risk factors associated with the development of ARDS and progression from ARDS to death include the following:
Older age
Neutrophilia
Organ dysfunction
Coagulation dysfunction
Although high fever (≥ 102.2°F [≥ 39°C]) was associated with a higher likelihood of ARDS development, it was associated with a lower likelihood of death. Among patients with ARDS, treatment with methylprednisone decreased the risk for death.
