Diabetes is a global public health crisis. According to the International Diabetes Federation, 537 million people worldwide are living with diabetes. This number is projected to rise to 700 million by 2045. In 2021, diabetes was responsible for 6.7 million deaths.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for individuals with diabetes. Globally, overall CVD affects approximately 32.2% of all persons with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Large prospective trials have identified T2D as a significant risk factor for stroke, angina, heart failure, myocardial infarction, and atherosclerosis.
