Anemia, a common manifestation of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), causes fatigue, malaise, and congestive heart failure. The development of MDS may be preceded by a few years of unexplained macrocytic anemia. Half of the patients with MDS will require a red blood cell transfusion during the course of their illness.
