The age of onset of AS is usually from the late teens to 40 years. Onset in persons older than 50 years is uncommon, although diagnosis of mild or asymptomatic disease may be made at a later age.
In patients with AS, low back pain symptoms are often worse in the morning or with inactivity. There is consensus that exercise is beneficial in AS. Through a systematic review, Gravaldi and colleagues found that supervised physiotherapy was more effective than was usual care in improving disease activity, functional capacity, and pain in patients with AS.
