According to 2019 guidelines from the ACR/Arthritis Foundation, strong recommendations include the following:
Exercise
Weight loss in patients with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis who are overweight or obese
Self-efficacy and self-management programs
Tai chi
Cane use
Hand orthoses for first CMC joint osteoarthritis
Tibiofemoral bracing for tibiofemoral knee osteoarthritis
Topical NSAIDs for knee osteoarthritis
Oral NSAIDs
TENS is strongly recommended against in patients with knee and/or hip osteoarthritis. Hydroxychloroquine is strongly recommended against in patients with knee, hip, and/or hand osteoarthritis. Iontophoresis is conditionally recommended against in patients with first CMC joint osteoarthritis.
