Sexual disorders are common, both worldwide and in the United States. Four main types or categories of sexual disorders are recognized. These include desire disorders (a lack of sexual desire or interest in sex), orgasm disorders (absence or delay of orgasm), arousal disorders (difficulty with or an inability to become physically aroused or excited during sex), and pain disorders (pain during sexual activity).
In addition to these disorders, paraphilic disorders may also impair healthy sexual activity. Paraphilia is any intense and persistent sexual interest other than sexual interest in genital stimulation or preparatory fondling with physically mature, consenting human partners. If a paraphilia causes distress or impairment to the individual or if its satisfaction entails personal harm, or a risk of harm to others, it is considered a paraphilic disorder.
Although many individuals are affected by a range of sexual disorders, many are hesitant to share concerns with their healthcare providers.
