CT is of limited value in predicting the pathologic stage of renal urothelial tumors owing to variable accuracy. However, it is useful in the diagnosis of UUTUC, because it can distinguish between radiolucent renal stones and upper urinary tract urothelial tumors in that stones appear opaque on CT scans.
CT can also be used to determine the local extent of UUTUC and the presence of regional or distant metastases.
