Type 2 diabetes (T2D) consists of an array of dysfunctions characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from the combination of resistance to insulin action, inadequate insulin secretion, and excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion. Poorly controlled T2D is associated with various microvascular, macrovascular, and neuropathic complications. According to the International Diabetes Federation, just over a half billion adults have diabetes; by 2045, this number is expected to rise to 700 million, a 46% increase. Despite an increasing array of treatments, approximately 6.7 million lives were lost to diabetes in 2021; one third of these diabetes-related deaths were in people younger than 60 years.
The association between diabetes and COVID-19 outcomes has been a recent area of focus. Given that relationship, as well as increasing incidence and related complications, T2D is growing as a major public health concern.
