Type 2 diabetes (T2D) consists of an array of dysfunctions characterized by hyperglycemia and resulting from the combination of resistance to insulin action, inadequate insulin secretion, and excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion. Poorly controlled T2D is associated with various microvascular, macrovascular, and neuropathic complications.
The International Diabetes Federation estimates that nearly 500 million adults are living with diabetes, with that number expected to reach 700 million by 2045. A report released in 2020 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 35 million Americans of all ages, or 10.5% of the population, had diabetes in 2018, with nearly 90 million (34.5% of the adult population) having prediabetes.
The association between diabetes and COVID-19 outcome has been a recent area of focus. Given that relationship, as well as increasing incidence and related complications, T2D remains a major concern.
