Stigma is a major factor limiting older adults from seeking HIV testing. In addition, many older people don't fully understand HIV, what the disease course looks like, and how to prevent infection. Some older adults believe that HIV prevention strategies don't apply to them.
In fact, many older individuals are sexually active and undergo major life changes (eg, new sexual partner after divorce) that can increase the risk for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Discussing screening and prevention strategies with older patients at risk is essential.
