Adult patients with severe atopic dermatitis often report intense itching that persists throughout the day. A recent study found that exposure to dust mites exacerbated the pruritus experienced by adults with severe atopic dermatitis. Other exacerbating factors included emotional distress and dry skin.

Sleep disruption due to the symptoms of atopic dermatitis is common in adult patients with severe disease.
