Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disorder that is characterized by hyperglycemia due to insulin resistance, inadequate insulin secretion, and excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion. This disorder accounts for 90%-95% of all diabetes and typically requires long-term medical care. For the management of patients with type 2 diabetes, the therapeutic goal is to maintain good glycemic control to prevent future complications. Poorly controlled diabetes can lead to many microvascular and macrovascular complications, which can greatly reduce quality of life and life expectancy in patients with type 2 diabetes.
