The components of CBT for patients with insomnia include sleep-restriction therapy, sleep hygiene education, cognitive therapy, relaxation therapy, and stimulus-control therapy. CBT is considered the most appropriate therapeutic modality for patients with primary insomnia.
Other nonpharmacologic treatments that may be helpful for insomnia include acupressure, dietary modification, and exercise, as long as it is done at least 6 hours before bedtime.
