The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, a landmark multicenter clinical trial, proved conclusively that intensive control of blood sugar in patients with type 1 diabetes delayed the onset and slowed progression of diabetic retinopathy. A similar study of patients with type 2 diabetes, the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, came to the same conclusion. Medical treatment should focus on optimizing blood glucose levels, controlling blood pressure, and lowering serum lipid levels. This also helps in prevention or delaying the onset of diabetic retinopathy changes.
