Normal bowel function necessitates coordinated motility, mucosal transport, and defecation reflexes. Opioids impede these processes throughout the entire gastrointestinal system. Opioid-induced constipation specifically results from disordered anal sphincter function, impaired propulsive peristalsis, and inhibition of intestinal mucosal secretion.
