Exudative (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. The risk for AMD increases with age; thus, as life expectancy has increased, so too has the prevalence and burden of AMD. Vision impairment and age-related eye diseases negatively affect economic and educational opportunities, diminish quality of life, and increase the risk for death.
The exudative, or wet, form of AMD is the advanced form of the disease. It accounts for only 10% of AMD cases but 90% of vision loss attributed to AMD. In recent years, considerable improvements in the treatment of wet AMD have resulted in delayed disease progression and improved outcomes.
