Globally, more than 200 million people are affected by osteoporosis, a metabolic bone disorder in which low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue lead to increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures. Osteoporotic fractures exert a tremendous burden on patients and on the healthcare system. Hip fractures are among the most frequently occurring fractures in older adults. They result in acute pain and loss of function and in most cases lead to hospitalization. Recovery is lengthy and often incomplete; as a result, patients may become permanent residents of care facilities. Early, accurate detection of patients with an increased risk for fracture is essential to reduce the burden of osteoporosis.
