Nearly all osteoporotic hip fractures are due to falls. Neuromuscular impairment due to vitamin D deficiency with secondary hyperparathyroidism or to corticosteroid therapy can increase the risk for falls, which consequently increases the risk for hip fracture. Rehabilitation and environmental modifications can help to decrease the risk for falls and subsequent fracture.

Risk factors for hip fracture appear to be similar in various ethnic groups.

Ninety percent of hip fractures occur in persons aged ≥ 50 years, most often in the eighth decade of life.

There is a 1.5-, 3.5-, 4.1-, and 4.8-fold increased risk for subsequent hip fracture, respectively, among patients with prior ankle, knee, olecranon, and lumbar spine fractures.
