In a recently published study, community-dwelling women ≥ 80 years of age with osteoporosis were found to have a high 5-year probability of hip fracture despite accounting for competing mortality risk, suggesting that drug treatment to prevent hip fractures may be beneficial in this population. The 5-year hip fracture probability in this population was 13% even after the competing risk for mortality was accounted for. Conversely, a much lower 5-year hip fracture probability of 4% was observed among women ≥ 80 years of age without osteoporosis, even though they had been identified as high fracture risk on the basis of having osteopenia and a 10-year predicted fracture probability at or above the FRAX intervention thresholds proposed by the NOF.

A recent retrospective study found that worse general health indirectly contributed to the imminent risk for hip fractures, specifically by having a negative influence on physical functioning. Cognition also had an indirect association with imminent hip fracture risk.

The FRAX tool to evaluate fracture risk includes a parental history of hip fracture as a clinical risk factor for subsequent hip fractures in patients with osteoporosis.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus has been shown to significantly increase the risk for hip fracture.
