More than 17 million global deaths each year are attributed to cardiovascular disease (CVD), making it the leading cause of death globally. By 2030, CVD-related mortality is expected to soar even higher, with more than 23 million annual deaths projected.

Secondary prevention for patients with CVD may reduce both the risk for recurrence and the risk for CVD-related mortality. Whereas primary prevention measures seek to prevent the onset of CVD, the goal of secondary prevention is to reduce the impact of CVD before development of any critical and permanent damage.
