Common adverse effects associated with metformin include the following:

  • Inadequate vitamin B12

  • Headache

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Gas

  • Abdominal swelling

  • Taste impairment

  • Weight loss

Infrequent side effects include the following:

  • Nail disorder

  • Skin rash

  • Stuffy and runny nose

  • Chills

  • Constipation

  • Dizziness

  • Excessive sweating

  • Flu-like symptoms

  • Heart throbbing/pounding

  • Indigestion

  • Intense abdominal pain
