Ethanol increases the toxicity of metformin. Excessive ethanol consumption may alter glycemic control. Alcohol may potentiate the risk for lactic acidosis.
Clomipramine, prednisone, and verapamil exhibit minor interactions with metformin. Clomipramine increases the effects of metformin by pharmacodynamic synergism. Prednisone decreases the effects of metformin by pharmacodynamic antagonism. Metformin increases the level or effect of verapamil by basic (cationic) drug competition for renal tubular clearance.
