The severity of asthma is classified as intermittent, mild persistent, moderate persistent, or severe persistent. Patients with asthma of any level of severity may have mild, moderate, or severe exacerbations. Patients with severe persistent asthma often have daily symptoms and frequent exacerbations. In addition, these patients experience nocturnal asthma and have limitations of physical activities because of asthma symptoms. Patients with severe asthma must often take multiple medications to prevent uncontrolled symptoms, and frequent reassessment and re-evaluation are critical for maintaining control of asthma symptoms.
