Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is an indolent subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that affects small lymphocytes. WM is rare, accounting for approximately 2% of hematologic malignancies with 1500 cases diagnosed per year in the United States. Clinical features include anemia, thrombocytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, and in rare cases serum hyperviscosity (hyperviscosity syndrome). When WM is diagnosed before the development of symptoms, patients may forgo therapy and be safely monitored.
