According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, one alcoholic drink-equivalent is described as containing 14 g (0.6 fl oz) of pure alcohol. Reference beverages that are one alcoholic drink-equivalent include 12 fl oz of regular beer (5% alcohol), 5 fl oz of wine (12% alcohol), or 1.5 fl oz of 80-proof distilled spirits (40% alcohol).
Packaged and mixed beverages widely vary in alcohol content. Thus, determining how many alcoholic drink-equivalents are in a beverage is necessary for moderate consumption.
