Atherosclerosis, in addition to causing coronary artery disease, affects the different noncoronary arterial territories, from the upper limbs and the extracranial carotid artery through the thoracic and abdominal aorta to the mesenteric arteries, renal arteries, and lower limbs. Atherosclerosis is characterized by endothelial dysfunction and vascular inflammation. Within the intima of the vessel wall, lipids, cholesterol, calcium, and cellular debris accrue. This buildup induces plaque formation, vascular remodeling, and luminal obstruction, as well as abnormal blood flow and reduced oxygen supply to target organs.
