Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive and behavioral impairment that significantly interferes with social and occupational functioning. The disease has a long preclinical period and progressive course during which plaques develop in the hippocampus and other areas of the cerebral cortex. Whether plaques themselves cause Alzheimer's disease or whether they are a by-product of the disease process remains an open question.
